Understanding Business Days and Working Time Calculations

Learn about business days, holiday calculations, and how to properly account for working time in project planning

What are Business Days?

Business days are working days that exclude weekends and public holidays. They're essential for project planning, legal deadlines, shipping estimates, and financial calculations.

Key Components:

  • Weekdays: Monday through Friday (typically)
  • Excluded Weekends: Saturday and Sunday (varies by region)
  • Public Holidays: National and regional holidays
  • Custom Patterns: Industry-specific working days

Different countries and industries may have different definitions of business days, which is why our calculator supports multiple configurations.

Business Days Calculator FAQ

Frequently asked questions about business days calculations

How accurate are the holiday databases?

Our holiday databases include major national holidays for each country. However, holidays can vary by state/province and may change from year to year. For critical applications, always verify with official sources or add custom holidays as needed.

What's the difference between including and excluding start/end dates?

Including a date means it counts as a business day if it's a working day. Excluding means it doesn't count regardless. For example, if you're calculating "5 business days from Monday," you might want to exclude the start date to get 5 full working days.

Can I add custom holidays?

Yes! Select "Custom Holidays" from the country dropdown and you can manually add specific dates that should be excluded from business day calculations. This is useful for company-specific holidays or local observances.

How do half-days work?

Half-day support allows you to count partial working days. For example, if a holiday falls on a Friday and your company closes at noon, you might count it as 0.5 business days instead of a full non-working day.
